When I first embarked on the adventure of living frugally, I found myself repeatedly making three specific things because they were easy to do and would always save me money. Here is my advice.
Cornbread
Cornmeal is even less expensive than is flour. You can use it in place of bread to pump up a meal. Corn muffin mixes are okay, but they really don’t save you much time at all. Cornbread can also be used as a topping for casseroles or for stuffing. Cornbread can really stretch a meal.
Popcorn
And now another thing with the word corn in it! Popcorn is actually one of the cheapest snacks around. it is very filling, and it contains a lot of fiber. Plus, it is just a fun snack to eat. Unfortunately, modern microwave popcorn, while convenient is amazingly so much more expensive than popcorn in its natural form.
Popping popcorn in a skillet can be a lot of fun to do and fun to watch. If you would rather microwave it though, you can simple put some popcorn in an ordinary paper bag, fold the end over at least three times and then microwave it. Popcorn will pop even without a bag, but that can get a little messy when you open the door!
Herbs
I use a lot of herbs in my cooking. So much so, that I used to buy dried basil in bulk. But there are some dishes that just are so much better with fresh herbs. These fresh herbs can be expensive in the store. Most herbs are pretty easy to grow, indoors or out, even when you start them from seed. And here is a shortcut. Go ahead and purchase one of those stalks of live basil at the store. But bring it home and plant it. It will yield crop after crop for you if you take care of the plant.
