Three Tips for Selecting a Down Comforter

If you have ever owned a down comforter, you know how wonderful it feels. Ultra soft and warm as toast don’t begin to describe it. As soon as the wind picks up a chill, I’m asking, “Is it time to get the comforter out?”

If you haven’t ever owned a luxurious down comforter, you don’t know what you’re missing. Maybe you have always wanted one but just didn’t really know how to go about choosing one. Try these tips:

Have a Fit

Make sure the comforter you choose is a good fit for your bed. Because it is thicker than other blankets or comforters, it might not fit the same as others. You want it to cover your bed completely and still reach down the sides and the end. Measure the surface of your bed, so when you look at sizes, you’ll see if it is sufficient to cover the bed fully.

Too Hot to Handle

A down comforter is incredibly warm, so if you generally keep the heat turned up high, like to sleep with layers, or live in a fairly mild climate, you’ll want a lightweight comforter. However, if it’s cold in your area or you tend to get cold at night, look for a heavier weight and fill.

Get Your Fill

Top of the line pure down comforters can be expensive. They are generally worth the investment, but if you can’t afford the big bucks, there are other options. You can look for a blend instead of pure down or you can choose a blanket with less fill. You can also shop around for the best deals or save up until you can afford the better blanket.

*This is a good time of year to watch for sales, because down comforters also make great gifts.
