Three Tips for Staging your Home

Staging a home is much like setting a stage for a play. Instead of a play, you set the “stage” to sell your home. Some people don’t realize that it often takes a lot of effort to stage the home just right for an open house or a private showing.

There are a few simple things anyone can do to make a home more appealing to the largest number of people. Try the following tips if you’re trying to sell your home:

Not just Neutral

While you will often hear that you should paint the walls neutral colors when selling a home, and this is good advice, keep in mind that light neutrals are best. Even if you have a space that wears chocolate brown well and gets plenty of natural light, remember that brown is difficult to paint over if they buyer doesn’t love it as much as you do. Whites, creams, light tans and grays, and even buttery colors are some of the better choices.

Window Treatments

Include the window treatments in the sale. No one wants to move in and have naked windows or be stuck hanging a sheet over a window. If you love your drapes, take them with you but replace them with something attractive and affordable before the showing. Clean and press existing window treatments if necessary.

Fresh Scents

There are all kinds of tricks and tips for making your house smell like home, from baking cookies to offer buyers to popping apples and cinnamon in the oven on warm just to create home baked scents. Another tip is to simply keep the Febreze or other fabric refresher nearby. Renuzit has a great citrus scent that will make your home smell summertime fresh. A few spritzes and you’re ready for guests. Also, tuck fabric softener sheets in where you can. Try slipping them under couch cushions, between towels in the linen cabinet, between the sheet and comforter, and in the wastebasket under the liner.
