If you need inspiration to de-clutter your home, think about all of the money you could find!
It is inevitable. Whenever I do a good attack on clutter or go searching for someone’s missing item that they had to have yesterday, I find money. Sometimes this is literal cash, while other times it is something that can be quickly turned into cash. Here are some of the areas where money may be hidden in your home.
Old birthday and holiday cards
How many birthday or holiday cards do you have laying around somewhere that are stuffed with cash, checks or gift cards? Our kids, and sometimes their parents, get gifts like these for special occasions. Most of the time we admire the cards, thank the person and put the cards somewhere “safe,” only to forget about them. Check in the places where you might put cards: a desk, a dresser top or drawer, etc.
Coat pockets
Coat pockets can be a real collector of objects, including cash. You might be running late after paying for gas or a small purchase and stuff the change in a coat pocket. You might be at a yard sale and forget to empty any remaining cash. I’ve found that in my house and in the homes of others, coat pockets often yield money along with the tissues.
Under beds and the bottom of closets
The under the bed spaces and the bottom of closets can be hiding places for many things that can be turned into cash. From lost library books that will save you $25 a book or more, to outgrown kids clothes and shoes that can be sold, these forgotten spaces are worth exploring.
Basements and garages
Whoo boy. You know that plenty of stuff gets put in these two areas and then forgotten. Grab a box and start at one end, working your way around the room. If you haven’t used something in a rare and honestly don’t anticipate using it any time soon, place it in the box. Then sell the contents at a yard sale, online, at a consignment shop, etc.
