If you get the bug to redecorate, or just to add a bit of life and color in the form of artwork, try heading to the thrift store. Don’t worry, I’m not going to send you off to get framed paint by numbers artwork (unless you want a little kitsch in your kitchen). Instead, why not take a look at some common thrift store finds and use them in creative ways to make one of a kind statements that will have your guest think that you spent a fortune on your design.
Frame It!
All sorts of interesting things can be framed. You can find old atlases in a thrift store. Remove some interesting pages and then frame them. The same goes for any interesting books. A book of presidents, National Geographic magazines, even old computer game manuals can be framed for a statement.
One really fun idea is to frame the boards from board games. Older classic games are the most interesting and graphic, I think. You can also take scrabble tiles and arrange them in words to frame.
Forget buying the frames, too, Instead purchase cheap artwork that you don’t like in frames that you do. Then switch out the art. If you get lucky, the artwork will even come with mats.
Bottle It!
You can find all sorts of interesting bottles at thrift stores. Arrange a collection of them on a table or a windowsill. Glass bottles of different colors will look especially pretty. or you can find various clear bottles and fill them with colored water. Simply fill a bottle half way with water and then add a bit of food coloring for interest.
You can also fill bottles with sand, shells, dried flower petals, pebbles, pine cones, seed pods, candy and other free or inexpensive decorating elements.
