Throwing A “De-Clutter Party”

I just received an invitation to a “De-Clutter Party.” Have you ever been to one? Have you ever heard of one? Apparently, my friend (the party’s hostess) got the idea from watching one of the morning news programs. She was so inspired by what she saw that she is having one of her own in a couple of weeks.

A “De-Clutter Party” is exactly what its name suggests… an opportunity to de-clutter your home and inspire your friends and family to do the same. Actually, there is a bit more to it than that.

Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to throw a “De-Clutter Party”:

1. Invite a bunch of people you know that are fortunate enough to have an excess of items that they can make do without.

2. Inform each person that they should bring at least 5 household items that they no longer need or want.

3. Prior to your guests arriving place large boxes near your front door. Label each box according to desirable contents (e.g. clothing, appliances, tools, books, etc.).

4. Once the boxes are filled decide what charitable organization you want to donate the items to (this could be an individual or group decision and can be made prior to or during the party).

5. Many local charities that accept used household items will actually come to your home to pick up your donations. If the charity you choose to donate to does not offer this service make use of the multiple vehicles (not to mention the many able bodies) that arrive at your party to aid you in getting the packed boxes over to the charity’s donation center.

The “De-Clutter Party” is not only a great way to get organized, but it also gives you the opportunity to help out people in need. I would also suggest getting your children involved. Have them look around their rooms and choose a couple of toys, games, or books to donate to children who aren’t fortunate to have as much as they do. It’s a great way to model desirable behavior. In a society where excess is a status symbol a “De-Clutter Party” with family and friends is a wonderful way to re-evaluate what is really important in life.
