Have you ever had the strong desire to just get an extra spiritual boost outside of your usual personal study and church meetings? Have you been longing for a girls’ weekend getaway? Well, Time Out for Women might just be your answer.
A few years ago, a couple of my friends asked me if I was interested in going. This was when I lived in GA, and the closest one was going to be 4 hours away. We all thought it would be a fun chance to leave the kids behind, stay in a hotel, and make the most of a girls’ weekend! I had never been to a Time Out for Women (TOFW), but anything that included girls’ time and no kids sounded fabulous to me!
I was not disappointed. One could argue, and I have heard it said that this is just a ploy for deseret book to promote their musicians and authors. Sure, you could look at it that way. The talks, and the music are all made up of people that have become LDS “famous” because of their published works, or music produced by Deseret Book. There were tables set up for your to purchase these books and music, and other Deseret Book trinkets all throughout the meeting hall where we were sitting. So, with each scheduled break, you had time to run to the bathroom, and shop a little.
However, if you are there with the intent of taking away the most of the talks, and listening with a heart that is willing to be taught, you will actually get so much more out of it than a girl’s weekend, and night without kids. You will be spiritually fed. I took notes there. I had time away from the distraction of my family to really ponder the things that they talked about. I was introduced to spiritual music that I may never have heard otherwise.
With that being said, it’s something I probably wouldn’t do every year. For one, it’s not super cheap. But, if you are really in dire need of an extra spiritual boost, and general conference is still 6 months away, Time Out For Women might just be your answer!
