As you make your Spring cleaning list, don’t forget your roof. That’s right, the roof. I never even thought about that, I figured with all the rain it gets as clean as it going to get throughout the year. I guess that’s not true. If parts of your roof are in constant shade algae can grow. There is no definite answer about whether or not algae affects the life of your roof but many people just don’t like the look of it so maybe you should clean it off. At the very least, before you sell your home get the roof cleaned.
I’m sure there are some people who would clean the roof themselves, I’m not one of those people so I’ve checked out how to have your roof cleaned.
There are many companies that will clean your roof but it’s important to do your homework. Ask what type of cleaning method they use. Will the products damage your yard or plants? Are they environmentally safe? Apparently some companies use high pressure washes and abrasive cleaners, both of which can damage your roof.
Make sure the company is well insured. Getting on the roof is always dangerous but add water and cleaners and it’s even more dangerous. Get proof of insurance before letting anyone on your roof.
Get several estimates as costs can vary greatly depending on the method used and the size and pitch of your roof.
Ask for lots of references and call them. Don’t think that just because they give them to you they have to be good. Many companies will just give you a list of customers without knowing how they feel about the work performed. Call, ask questions, until you feel satisfied with the answers.
If your roof needs to be repaired or replaced do that first. There is no point in cleaning a roof that has really outlived it’s useful life. Better to put that money towards replacing it. The same with repairs, if your roof is in need of repair, having it cleaned before you repair it can make the problem worse.
So, if algae is a problem, get your roof cleaned, the planes will appreciate the view.
