Time to Get Moving! Why Weekends Count BIG Time

As a busy working mom, it’s not always easy to find the time for a consistent exercise routine during the workweek. However, on the weekends I can usually make the time to work physical activity into my day a lot easier. For instance, yesterday, after making breakfast for my husband and kids, I went for a jog.

Jogging is an enjoyable get-away for me. I do some of my best thinking while hitting the pavement. Jogging outdoors has a much different feel than running on a treadmill inside the gym. I enjoy jogging in the morning most of all–the sunshine on my face, cold air against my skin, and aesthetic beauty all around–it doesn’t get much better than that. Even though I may feel tired and a bit sluggish as I begin, I soon catch my stride. After I am done and I arrive back home, I feel good. My muscles feel tight and I feel energized.

Today was a bit different, though. My husband and I took turns going to the gym. Our gym offers a Kids Club six days per week, excluding Sundays. I did a nice leg workout and then hit the treadmill for half-an-hour. But my workout didn’t stop there today. I came home and cleaned the house. Just carrying the vacuum up the stairs feels like a workout to me, so I figured I’d maximize the pump of energy I still had going from the gym.

Afterward, my husband and I took our two children to the baseball field. An hour-and-a-half later, I had jogged the bases probably ten times, swung at some baseballs and retrieved what seemed like 1,000 baseballs from the outfield. Energized though I may have been, I was pooped. It was time to go home and relax.

Weekends offer a wonderful opportunity to find ways to become active. Whether taking a jog, taking a walk, going for a bike ride or playing baseball with the kids, the important thing is to get moving! Take advantage of all your pockets of opportunity. Find ways to get moving that are fun and rewarding to you. For some it is the outdoors and for others the inside of a gym that helps inspire them. Find your place of inspiration, or several places if you’d like, and visit them whenever you can. You’ll get there–we all will.
