Time to Take Down Christmas Decorations

Well, we finally got everything up and now it’s time to take it down. This is the part most people dread. It is the whole “Christmas let down” thing many of us feel after the holiday, but it’s also because it’s a pain to take it all down and put it away.

Many people will wait until after New Year’s to tackle this task, but whenever you do it, there are some tips to help make it easier.

Pack Similar Items Together

This may seem basic, but many people box up everything together with no real sense of order. It’s simpler if you begin with the tree and pack up ornaments and garlands together. You might also want to include the lights, unless you have quite a few and they need a container of their own. It’s also good to wrap Christmas lights around something (a piece of cardboard will work) so they don’t get tangled and to separate outdoor lights from indoor Christmas lights.

Use What You Have for Packing Materials

Gather up all the bubble wrap, tissue paper, and large scraps of wrapping paper and use these items to wrap your Christmas decorations before packing them away. These materials will provide cushion to help prevent breakage, and you won’t have to buy extra items for this purpose or worry about newsprint coming off newspapers and harming your decorations.

Get Rid of Decorations You Don’t Use

We all have a few decorations that just don’t work any more. Some are probably still lying in the bins where you store your decorations, because you didn’t even want to use them this year. Instead of leaving them in the bottom of the bin, taking up space, now is the time to toss them. Donate them if you’d like, if they’re worth giving away, or just toss them with the empty boxes and used wrapping paper. You’ll have more space to store new things as you collect them.

Oh, and don’t forget to grab a few new pieces at the after Christmas sales!
