With much of the country melting under triple digit temperatures, I’m not sure you’d want to throw an outdoor summer party unless it involves a pool full of ice.
Last week, huge chunks of ice were added to public pools in Omaha, Nebraska, to help patrons cool off as heat indices surpassed 115 degrees. Not a bad idea for a backyard pool party as well.
If you are looking for other cool ways to keep your summer party guests entertained in the sweltering heat, consider these ideas:
Movie Night in the Pool: Our local Parks and Recreation Department just hosted a Movie Night Pool Party at a local public pool. Guests were encouraged to bring tubes or rafts to sit in while “Finding Nemo” was projected on a huge screen above the pool. Guests could float on the water while watching the popular fish flick. You could do the same in your own pool by renting a large projector, providing inflatable rafts or lounge chairs for guests to sit in, and creating your own concession stand with popcorn, soda, and candy.
Go Fish: Go with a fish theme for a kid’s pool party. Your young guests can play Marco Polo and Sharks and Minnows in the pool, while older kids can have a cannonball contest. Other entertainment options include water gun battles, water balloon fights and “Simon Says” or charades in the pool. Just remember to hand out extra sunscreen to all of your guests and provide extra shade in your yard by adding large beach umbrellas.
Create Your Own Waterpark: If you don’t own a large pool, then consider turning your backyard into a mock waterpark. Purchase or rent an extra-large inflatable waterslide, multiple sprinklers, and plenty of water toys for kids to play with. Fill a bunch of plastic kiddie pools for younger guests or set up a Slip and Slide that empties into a small inflatable pool.
