Hair dye is a fantastic product. Hair color is available in a great variety of colors and formulas that can be used at home at an affordable price. Some of us even use hair color to hide a little gray (um, not me of course, but I’m sure some people do). The problem with hair color is that it can stain things. It stains pretty much everything it touches other than hair. The idea then is to avoid letting it touch anything besides your hair.
So, try these tips if you’d like to dye your hair without changing the color of other items in your home:
Vinyl Shower Curtain Liners
Pick up some cheap vinyl shower curtain liners at your favorite dollar store or discount center. Use one to cover the bathroom sink and counter. You can cut a slot for the faucet, leaving room for water to run into the drain, while keeping everything else covered. Use another shower curtain liner to cover the floor, standing on it while you use your favorite hair color.
Rags and Bags
Cut up a stained old shirt or an old towel and make it into rags. You can use the rags to dab any drips to keep from burning your skin, but also to quickly wipe away and drips or splashes from the sink or vanity. Save a couple rags to wash out the tub after rinsing hair dye from your hair. Bags can be used in place of the shower curtain method above. Large trash bags can be slit down the side and bottom and opened up flat. Stand on one and use another to cover counters.
*You can also break down an empty box and lay it flat to protect the floor.
Old Clothes
No matter how careful you plan to be, you can generally expect to wind up with some hair color on your clothes. It’s a good idea to wear an old shirt (preferably not a pullover) or simply wrap up in an old towel that you’re not worried about staining. These items can be washed and saved to use the next time.
