Tips for Hosting a Winter Soup Party

With Old Man Winter working overtime, this is the ideal time to host a winter soup party. This week I will be sharing a variety of recipes for those of you looking to share a hearty helping of delicious homemade soup with extended family and friends or those who simply want an easy and affordable way to warm up on a cold winter’s day.

If you choose the former, then consider the following tips to ensure your winter soup party goes off without a hitch:

POTLUCK. Just because you are hosting the soup party doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do all of the cooking. If you are tight on time or money, then consider hosting a potluck soup party and have each guest bring his or her favorite soup to share. Just remember to keep tabs on who’s bringing what to avoid having five versions of Chicken Noodle Soup on hand come party day.

CROCK POTS. You can keep a spread of soups warm by using crock pots. If you are serving the soups buffet-style, then add a place card in front of each pot to identify what’s in each.

DISPOSABLE. To cut down on dishes (or for those of you who have limited soup bowls), use small disposable plastic bowls or mugs. The mugs also come in handy for guests who rather take small samples of all the offerings rather than dip into a large bowl of just one recipe.

RECIPES. Have guests run off copies of their soup recipes to share with others. You can place the printed recipes next to each pot of soup so they are easily accessible to guests who want to make their own versions at home.

ACCOUTREMENTS. Along with the hearty soups, stock your buffet with warm breads such as crusty French bread, cornbread or Sourdough breadsticks. You may also want to serve an assortment of cheeses and salad. Or, you could set out an assortment of raw veggies such as celery and carrot sticks.
