If you are a small business owner working from home, or simple a person who likes to stay organized in your home office, then chances are, keeping your desktop clutter-free is difficult. Many people invest hundred, even thousands, of dollars into organization units and cleaning products to kelp them keep their desktops uncluttered and clean.
Here are some tips to help you keep your own desktop uncluttered.
First of all, many people complain that they simply don’t have enough time to dedicate towards cleaning. They will pile bills, unopened mail, magazines and the like onto their desktop in hopes that someday soon they will be able to tackle the organization process. This process does not take long, but can be arduous if you do not already have an organization system. Be sure to spend some time developing a system that works well for you.
It is important that you learn to throw things away. Many people hang onto mail, magazines, newspapers, pads of paper and pens because they hate to throw things away. They worry about what will happen if they discover that they actually needed the items. Yet, the fact of the matter is, you can throw just about anything away (unless it is an unpaid bill) and not really miss it too much. If you truly feel horrible throwing items away, it is possible that you have a disease that makes you horde items. This disease is nothing to be ashamed of and is more common than people think.
Next, once you have gotten rid of all of the junk and unnecessary clutter on your desktop, take some time to develop an organization system. Set side a drawer for junk. This drawer should be the only spot in your entire home office where you are allowed to throw things that you are not sure what to do about.
Set aside another drawer for miscellaneous office supplies, such as pens, staplers, rubber bands and pads of paper. This drawer should be small and shallow, but it is advised that you have one, regardless of the space.
Next, set aside a drawer to use as your filing cabinet. If you so not have a drawer in your desk that is deep enough to hold manila file folders, then purchase an inexpensive filing cabinet from your local discount warehouse. You can purchase several sizes, but most people choose to purchase the two-drawer option that fits neatly under any desk.
Inside the filing cabinet, set aside files for the various needs that you might have. One might be bills. Another might be recipes. Ity is also popular to set aside notebooks for the bills. These notebooks can be three-rings binder. Every time you receive a bill, simple add it to the binder so that you can easily keep track of your expenses.
Select a shelf or drawer in your office to place larger office items, such as unused file folder, paper, and envelopes. These items are not accessed on a daily basis, so can be kept at more than an arm’s length away, but should still be easily accessible.
Once you develop your organization system, the hardest part will be sticking to it. Exercise discipline. It only takes seconds to relieve your self and your office space of undue clutter and stress.
