- Comfortable and Simple Clothing. A family portrait should capture the essence of your family. Leave the days of stiff portraits with everyone in their Sunday best in the past, unless of course, you are a formal type of family. There is nothing wrong with glitz or formality. Just as long as your family is natural and everyone gets to show off their individual style. Yet, make it simple because too many members in patterned clothing or clashing colors will be a distraction.
- Morning Shoots are Best. With children it is important to schedule portraits in the morning and well before lunch. Hungry and tired children and the camera do not get along. If you chose to have outdoor pictures the morning light is beautiful in pictures.
- Plan Ahead. The day before the shoot make sure everyone knows what they are wearing and has everything set aside. The last thing you want to deal with is a lost shoe, torn tights, or jeans still in the wash, on the day of pictures.
- Make it Fun. Pictures are a time to show off your family. You are seeking to capture the heart of your family on film. No need to be serious. Find a photographer that encourages your family to be themselves.
- Take Candid Photos. Posed pictures can be beautiful. However, to capture the sparkle you will want your family to act naturally. Find a photographer that is willing to take a lot of photos and take them while your family is relaxed and having fun. For instance, pictures of dad and son throwing a football, families having tickle fights, little girls twirling, cuddles, walking naturally down a path, or playing tag, will all get the most natural and best shots of who your family is. The best photos session my family ever had was when the photographer seemed to just follow us around as we interacted at a park together. Some shots were posed but the majority were inspired by us acting naturally.
