Tips For Taking Great School Day Photos

With the return to school also comes the return of school day pictures. Like everything else about Tyler’s first year of school, I am excited about his school day photos. They haven’t even announced when they will be taking pictures but still I am excited. And yes, I have one of those frames that holds a picture from kindergarten through 12th grade!

I didn’t realize there was an art to taking school day photos but apparently there is according to an article I read yesterday in the Mobile Press-Register. In the article, school portrait experts offer tips on how parents can get the most from their money. Oh and by the way, you should expect to spend about $23 for each package.

So what can you and your kids do to ensure a picture perfect school day photo?

Experts recommend the following:

Hair and shirt collars should be checked.

Kids should practice smiling at home.

Don’t be a slouch–good posture is essential.

Kids should get a good nights sleep the night before the photo session to make sure they look well-rested.

Parent should take their child for a hair cut two weeks before picture day to avoid having a “fresh-cut look”.

Nails should be cleaned and trimmed in case their hands end up in the photos.

Kids should also be kept out of the sun to avoid tan lines, which experts say aren’t flattering in a photo.

Clothes with solid colors and no patterns work best and they should be wrinkle free, permanent press or all cotton. A good choice for boys is khaki pants and a polo shirt. For girls, a nice dress but one that is not too frilly.

Jewelry should be simple and small so as not to pull the focus from the child’s face. The same is true for bows and ribbons.

And finally, parents can also practice taking pictures at home, especially for the younger kids who may be unable to sit still for the shoot.
