Tips On Creating A Home Office In Your Kitchen

In my previous blog I told you about my kitchen office. With a bit of planning I was able to transform a built-in nook into a functioning and eye-pleasing (when it’s not cluttered with papers) work area for not a lot of money.

The following are tips on how you too can make the most of a compact area:

1. Hide Your Equipment. Consider tucking your keyboard and mouse behind a false drawer front by using hinged drawer slides on an existing drawer. You could also use an under-the-desktop computer mounting system to create more space.

2. Create More Desk Space. I found mounting hardware and hung my computer monitor under the cabinet. You could also attach the monitor to the wall with a Single Axis Mount. This option allows you to rotate the screen a full 180 degrees, which means you can view it from any angle. Then, simply place your keyboard and mouse on a pullout platform and viola—more surface area.

3. Organize Cords. Using grommets to guide power cords and cables through the countertop can help eliminate the unsightly mess of cords that snake around your desk.

4. Hide Wires. I can’t stand looking at the tangle of wires and cords near outlets. When you are working in an area with limited space it’s best to keep your area as safe and clutter free as possible. I use a wire management system. It works on existing or new construction baseboard molding and keeps the wires neatly tucked away and out of sight.

5. Install Pullout Shelves. This is the method I use to store large items such as my printer. A pullout shelf allows you to store your bulky equipment out of sight, yet still have it readily accessible. What’s more, you can install the pullout shelves or drawers in an existing cabinet.
