Tips to Remember Before Hitting the Slopes

Mother Nature has been very, very generous to skiers this season. In a previous blog I joked that our backyard is so snow covered it were a bit hillier we could easily turn it into a mock ski resort. And we aren’t alone. Mountains from Oregon to Maine and just about everywhere in between are blanketed with the white stuff and forecasters say we can expect even more flakes to fly in the coming weeks.

All the snow has many skiers rushing out to shoosh down the slopes and various resorts are taking notice. In fact, many of them are offering package deals to entice families to ski and stay at their respective properties. With so many affordable options available from coast to coast a record number of winter sports enthusiasts are looking to get out and enjoy the fruits of Mother Nature’s labor. However, in the midst of having fun on the slopes many skiers forget to put safety first.

If you are considering a trip to a ski resort this winter keep in mind these tips that will help you stay safe on the slopes:

Get In Shape. Prior to heading up the mountain make sure you are physically fit. Studies show the majority of ski-related injuries – especially to legs – occur because people are out of shape, yet still head out on the slopes. It pays to get your muscles in shape well before you leave on a ski vacation.

Don’t Take Risks. Assess your skill level and know your limits. It’s not a good idea to venture out on runs that are too advanced for your skill level. Also, don’t push yourself unless you have a qualified guide on hand to give advice and help you should you overestimate your abilities.

Don’t Count Out Lessons. Even if you are a good skier, it never hurts to have an expert ease you back on to your skis and take you to the next level.

Consider Ski Insurance. Having a policy in place won’t prevent accidents, but it will be invaluable if tragedy should strike. It’s also important to choose an insurance plan, which provides coverage against those little things that can spoil a ski holiday, such as lack of snow, too much snow or loss or damage to your ski equipment.
