As the snow line creeps closer down the mountains where we live, we’re anticipating the first snow of winter. I like the snow because it blankets everything, making the whole world silent. It also tires out my preschooler, which leads to some beautifully silent nights!
What large motor activities can you do in the snow with your preschooler?
Go for a snow stomp. For fun, put on snow shoes or create some yourself using thick cardboard. Make monster feet that slip over your real shoes and stomp around.
Make a snow tunnel. If the snow is deep enough, move your legs through the snow, making a deep path. Then shovel snow onto the sides of the path and make a snow tunnel to walk through!
Create snow angels, snow monsters, and anything else you can think of. I like to make a series of snow angels that look like a line of paper cutouts in the snow, all holding hands. We make angels with dresses, angels with pants, and angels with funny hats – hold your hands above your head to make this one.
Use old Rubbermaid kitchen boxes to create snow bricks, and make a fancy snow fort. Our favorite feature is to add a soft snow chair with a cup holder for a cup of hot chocolate.
Play with the trees. If there is not too much snow and you have some sturdy coniferous trees around, move the branches and let the snow slide off with a satisfying thump.
Find a small hill close to home and invent sleds that can go down that hill. Can you slide down in a box? A bag stuffed with paper? An inner tube? How about an old beanbag chair? Discover what slides and what doesn’t!
