‘Tis the Season For Colds and Flu

Last night it happened: the sick but visited our house, and if my guess is correct, she won’t be leaving for a looooong time. That’s how it works in households. One person gets sick, then a sneeze meant for the hand accidentally rockets into little sister’s face. Then little sister just HAS to give mommy a big, wet kiss. Then mommy gets daddy sick and so on and so forth…you get the picture.

My son started kindergarten this year, so I knew it wasn’t likely that we would go the entire season without having some strain of sickness filtering throughout our house. But still, this one hit hard. It started with my son coughing yesterday morning. The thing that struck me as odd was that this initial cough was already deep and sounded like it was in his chest. By nightfall, a fever had ensued and by 1:30 this morning, he was at my bedside saying, “Mommy, I’m shaking.” And he was—he was shaking like a little leaf, the poor thing. That’s what low-grade fevers do. Thank goodness for fever reducers.

Needless to say, I brought him into bed with me and held him in my arm because seeing him shaking and doing the “fever moan” was breaking my heart.

This morning, he’s running around again although he’s coughing. Now my struggle is to keep him on the couch so he can get the rest he needs to get better.

How about you—has sickness hit your house yet this season? Make sure you’re prepared. It’s wise to keep a vaporizer in the house, lots of water and low-sugar juices, and yes, chicken soup. Having a few bottles of cold and flu medicine and some pain killers isn’t a bad idea either. Trust me, colds and flu don’t always “hit” in the middle of the day, so it’s better to be prepared for the middle of the night onset than to be scrambling to find an all night pharmacy.
