To co-op or not to co-op?

Recently, I was asked if joining a homeschool co-op was important or essential for the first few years of homeschooling and for children of the preschool age.

My answer:

I think co-ops can be a great place for support and social interaction. Not all co-ops are a good fit so don’t feel bad if it doesn’t work out. However, it could also be the start to friendships for you and your children. Most co-ops are once a week so the time and effort is manageable. I suggest being honest with the co-ops and asking if you can attend a meeting to determine if it is a good fit. Some co-ops work very well with younger siblings while others may not. So basically, I have no real answer other then telling you to get more info from those who run the co-op. Co-ops are not necessary…and certainly not something you need to feel pressured to join at this early stage. If you are seeking some fun, friendship and support it may be the place.

Many others answered as well all supporting the decision to not join co-cops. Some thought it was too intense and too much work for little ones. Others had bad social experiences, mostly concerning small children. Many just went it alone and did so well they did not see the need to join one or one was not available. I have heard of more bad experiences than good but that does not mean co-ops are inherently bad. There is one in my area that offers a variety of programs for kids of many different ages. There is always something fun going on for the kids and the parents.

So, tell me your experience. Do you enjoy your co-op? Have you tried one? If so, why or why not?
