One of my fondest memories as a child was going to the pumpkin patch, much to my parent’s surprise. Here they had spent multiple dollars on tickets for the circus and other entertaining shows that catered to children when what really made me happy was the pumpkin patch.
The pumpkin patch has fall written all over it. The cool, crisp smell of the leaves, the steaming cups of hot chocolate, the sweet cider and donuts. These were just some of the things going on at the pumpkin patch that I was taken to as a child. I didn’t care for the scary aspect of Halloween. My joy was in the fall season itself. My brother and I would go through the crudely fashioned haunted house at the farm market. I didn’t like it at all. I would hang on to the sleeve of my brothers jacket and bury my face in it while he led me as quickly as he could out the exit door. I thought it was stupid and pointless, although I did find it kind of scary. On Halloween night I did dress up though, but it was just for the purpose of collecting candy. I was embarrassed to be seen like that in truth.
I still enjoy going to the pumpkin patch every year, but not to pick out a pumpkin. I never really enjoyed that either, but just to take in all of the smells and sounds around me that the fall season brings.
There are numerous pumpkin patches now, which have far more in terms of activities than we had. Take your kids to the pumpkin patch before this season comes to a close. There you will find pumpkins, scary decorations, mazes, hayrides, tasty treats and more. Some farm markets have animals that the kids can feed also. It is a great time of the year. Enjoy it while you can.
