Toddler Scarf and Mittens

Do you have any toddlers on your list this year? I love shopping for the little ones but at the same time, unless their parents tell you specifically what to buy them it’s hard to know. If a child doesn’t live in your home you don’t know what toys they already have. So I whipped up a scarf and mittens for my favorite three year old. She may have more mittens but this is the only pair made especially for her.

This will take about a half an hour and all you need is some fleece and elastic.

First, trace around your child’s arm and hand. Trace from the elbow down, you want these gloves to be long so they will stay tucked in coat sleeves. Toddlers are famous for taking off their mittens or crying because snow gets inside the sleeves of their coats. With these mittens that won’t be a problem. You can see from the picture that I cut the side straight instead of curving in at the wrist, I left this curve on the paper so I would know where to put the elastic.

Fold the fleece in half and lay the pattern with the long straight edge on the fold. Cut two. Cut the elastic about one inch longer than their wrist measurement, this allows for sewing and also ensures the mittens aren’t too tight on their wrist. Pin the elastic to the inside of the mitten, stretching to reach from side to side, sew.

Next sew the mitten seam, clip the curves and turn inside out. You can hem the open edge but it’s not necessary. Your toddler can where these long and tucked in a coat or you can roll them down and cuff them.

For the scarf decide how long and wide you want the scarf to be and cut two pieces of fleece. You can cut one and fold it in half or just use one, I wanted it doubled for warmth. I cut two pieces so I had to seam each side. When you sew the seam start and end four inches from the edge. After sewing and turning inside out, fringe the edge and your done. Wasn’t that easy!
