Excuses, excuses…everybody has some. Whenever we face doing something we know we should but don’t really want to, we can come up with all kinds of excuses. And this has never been truer than in the area of fitness. So let’s take a look at the top 5 excuses for not exercising and how to overcome them.
The first excuse is, “I don’t have enough time.” I mention this quite often in my blogs but I will say it again…we make time for what we want to make time for. Time is there. It is available. However it is up to us what we do with it.
We can fill time with all sorts of things that are fun or enjoyable but they not may be beneficial. We can fill our time with busywork that never allows for a moment of peace. But in reality we choose for the most part, how we spend our time.
So there IS time. It is just a matter of whether or not we will utilize our time to our advantage. Are we willing to give something up? Are we willing to wake up a little earlier? These are things we need to consider when we say that we don’t have time.
The second excuse is, “I can’t afford a gym membership.” Fitness can be relatively inexpensive or even free. Take walking. It’s a great form of exercise and costs you nothing. In fact, it might even save you money. You could forego a trip to the store using up gas in your car and take a nice long walk there instead. The point is you don’t have to belong to a gym in order to get fit.
The third excuse is, “It doesn’t work.” The reality is that too many people give up early on. We are a society where we like to see instant results. But fitness is about changing over time. And yes, sometimes it does take several months before you will see any difference.
Perseverance is the only way to see results. It is the only way to improve your health in the long run. There are no quick fixes (at least that are healthy) so you might as well suck it up and deal with it.
The fourth excuse is, “I can’t afford to eat healthy.” Granted, I will give you that it’s generally more costly to make healthy choices in food. But it is worth the extra and if you really want to get creative, you could grow your own vegetables. There are ways around it but it will take some planning. In the end, I would rather pay a little more to live a little longer.
And the last excuse is, “I hate exercising.” This is actually a pretty valid point. If you don’t actually enjoy doing something, why would you want to? Believe me…I used to feel the same way. I really hated the idea of exercising and when I first started out, I did it with a feeling of real drudgery.
But over time as I continued to press on, I began to develop a real liking for exercise. I will probably never love it but I do like it and it’s a lot less effort to put in the time and energy.
What excuses have you made? Are you ready to overcome them?
