What is a stereotype? It is generally an idea or a perception about a specific demographic that may have some truth to it but is not likely to be true of all persons in that demographic. Still, we all tend to hold common stereotypes of certain people in mind.
What are some common stereotypes when it comes to men? Here are ten, in no particular order:
1. Men have a difficult time relinquishing the remote control.
2. Speaking of remote controls, many men would have one for everything if it were possible.
3. Men will watch a show they’ve already seen repeatedly if they can’t find the remote, rather than getting up to change the channel (or they’ll wait until a women enters the room to get it for them).
4. Men think about sex often or always.
5. Men are proud of their bodily functions, especially those of the auditory variety.
6. Men age well.
7. Men carry weight well.
8. Gray hair makes a man look distinguished, rather than old.
9. Men snore.
10. Men like to fight, watch other people fight, and play games that involve fighting.
Do you recognize any of these with the man in your life? Do you guys recognize any of the above? There is a certain amount of truth to each of these notions, but none of them applies to all men, or applies equally to all men.
These are all in good fun, but the problem with stereotypes is that we often judge people by the most extreme aspects of them as if they are completely true. Most times, stereotypes are not a fair standard to use. We don’t like to be judged in this manner, so we really shouldn’t do it either. Still, sometimes, it’s hard to believe that some aren’t universal when they seem so common, isn’t it?
I bet men have similar feeling about us; ladies, what do you think?
