Towel Tips

towels Is your linen closet overflowing with mismatched towels? Or can you never find a clean towel when you need one? Fluffy warm towels can be a luxury that doesn’t cost a fortune. And, a well-organized linen closet can make it a pleasure to take your shower or bath, make it easier to have guests over and just set a nice tone for the rest of your closets. Here are some tips about towels.

Let’s start with how many towels you actually need. I would suggest two to four towels per person living in your home. Most people go through a towel about every three days. Having two will allow you to get through the week pretty easily. Double this to four for anyone who uses a separate towel for hair or if you have frequent guests over.

Do you use wash clothes? I consider these single use items because bacteria can grow quickly on a wet washcloth. Leave your washcloth to dry in the shower, then toss it in the laundry the next day when you grab a new one.

One way to get everyone to be responsible for their own towels and not leave them all over the floor or discard them after one use is to color code your towels. Assign each family member a separate color. If there are no more blue towels for example, then that person is out of luck until the next wash day.

Old and frayed towels can be cut into wash cloths, used as rags or donated to an animal shelter.

Skip the fabric softener when you launder towels. Yes it will get them nice and soft and fluffy, but it will also reduce their absorbency.

When purchasing new towels, check the following:

The weight of the towel; it should feel heavier than it looks for maximum absorbency

The loops on the towel; it should have thick heavy loops that are densely packed

The edges should be double turned and double stitched; this will help prevent or at least delay fraying, giving your towel longer life.
