Toy Recalls 1/19/06: Baseball Gloves and Bicycle Handlebar Stems

This is the first of many recalls I will be bringing you! I will be posting them every week, or when I receive notice that something has been recalled. This will be a sort of informational bulletin for you to be aware of what products have been found to be unsafe.

These two recalls are from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Recall #1

Mizuno USA, Inc. Recalls “Gamer” Baseball Gloves Due to Chance of
Infection in At-Risk Consumers

The CPSC, in cooperation with the Mizuno USA, Inc., announced a voluntary recall of their product, Mizuno “Gamer” Baseball Gloves. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

They have recalled approximately 12,800 units

Importer: Mizuno USA, Inc., of Norcross, Ga.

Hazard: These gloves could contain aspergillus mold. Such mold usually does not affect healthy individuals, but could cause respiratory or other infections in individuals with chronic health problems or in individuals who have impaired immune systems.

No injuries or incidents have been reported.

Description: The recall includes all Mizuno “Gamer” baseball gloves. These gloves have the word “Gamer” printed on the palm of the gloves.

They were sold at sporting goods stores nationwide from July 2005 through October 2005 for about $80.

Manufactured in the Philippines

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the gloves and contact Mizuno USA, Inc. for information on how to receive a free replacement baseball glove.

Recall #2

CPSC, Syntace USA Announce Recall of Bicycle Handlebar Stems

The CPSC, in cooperation with Syntace USA, today announced a voluntary recall of their F99 (Force 99) Bicycle Handlebar Stems. following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

They have recalled approximately 2,300 units

Distributor: Syntace USA, of Olney, Ill.

Hazard: The recalled bicycle stems can crack or break under normal conditions, causing the rider to fall and suffer serious injury.

No incidents or injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled bicycle handlebar stem is black. Stems with production codes 01 03 through 45 04, and stems with no production code are included in this recall. The production code is the bottom set of numbers located on the end of the stem.

Sold by: Bicycle dealers, mail order magazines and on the Internet from May 2003 through July 2005 for about $90.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should stop using bicycles equipped with the recalled handlebar stem immediately and contact Syntace for instructions to receive a free replacement stem and installation.
