The year I decided to run the Chicago Marathon just happened to be the same year my company adopted a new travel policy. Basically, the new policy meant employees would be traveling frequently with very little notice. When I train to run a marathon I usually start my regime about three months out and follow it religiously. At first I was frustrated that they implemented the policy mid way through my training, but I eventually got over it and figured I would just have to make it work.
Keeping fit while on the road (and I’m not just talking about marathon training) can be a challenge. But, there is no reason to cancel your daily fitness routine just because you are away from home. If you are a runner, traveling to a different city gives you the chance to jog by new scenery. If you are a weightlifter, traveling could mean getting to use unique fitness equipment at your hotel’s gym. Or, it could mean having the opportunity to switch up your exercise routine—if your hotel has a pool, go for a swim instead of sitting on a stationary bike.
However, if running is your thing and you have sworn off treadmills there are some common sense precautions you should take before you hit the streets in an unfamiliar city:
· If it is possible, when jogging or walking, team up with a colleague, friend or family member-especially if you are hitting the streets go early morning or late at night.
· Avoid isolated roads, trails and paths. Stick to well-lit, well-populated routes.
· Wear clothing that makes you visible to motorists–bright colors for day and white or reflective clothing at dawn and dusk.
· Always carry identification.
· Carry change for an emergency phone call.
· Consider carrying a whistle or pepper spray (I can pepper spray when I run in cities other than my own).
· Always wear your glasses or contacts.
· Stay alert, especially if you’re in a strange area. Don’t walk or jog wearing headphones.
Another tip: if you are a die-hard fitness fanatic you may want to inquire about a hotel’s fitness amenities prior to booking a room. If you are not satisfied with what they have to offer call around until you find one that meets your needs.
Whether you are traveling for business or your heading out on a family vacation, travelling shouldn’t be an excuse to stop exercising.
