Travel Food and Water

Whether you’re taking a long walk, a trip to the dog park, or a family vacation… you’ll need a way to bring food or water for your pets.

Some dogs are willing and able to drink from a squeeze bottle or a regular drink bottle. My Miko wouldn’t lap water while it was being poured, but he would drink from my hand if I put the water there. My Lally isn’t quite as picky about her water — I’ve caught her drinking rainwater out of flowerpots on more than one occasion!

Planning a long car ride? Look for a bowl with a donut-hole lid. The wide lip of the lid will help keep water from splashing out while the car is in motion; the hole in the center will give your pet access to water whenever he needs a drink. A donut-hole bowl is also good for dogs with long ears, who tend to dip their ears when they drink.

If your dog prefers a traditional bowl, you can look for a travel canteen with a screw-on top or a collapsible food or water bowl. The lidded canteen is nice because you don’t need a separate bottle to bring water; some come with straps for easy carrying. Another portable water option is a bottle with an attached pan. The pan flips out to hold the water, then folds in against the side of the bottle for carrying.

Try to pick a water solution that is easy to carry and not too heavy — your pet won’t be able to drink the water if you don’t want to carry it along!

Packing food for a family vacation that includes the pets? You might want to pre-portion out the dry food into little baggies for ease in serving. You can also check your local pet supply store for travel food bags. Travel food bags are available in different sizes. Look for one that seals securely so you don’t end up with a food spill in the trunk of your car!
