Recently, a hotel staffer in Washington, D.C. went above and beyond the call of duty to help a beleaguered guest retrieve his lost laptop from a city cab. And if you thought that story was incredible then you will truly appreciate what employees at a Disney resort recently did for guests there.
Two weeks ago a couple from Massachusetts checked into Disney’s Wilderness Lodge resort in Florida. They and their two children had a magical time during their stay and were sad to see their trip come to an end. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that as the family was tidying up their room before checking out dad, Paul Campanale dumped a cardboard bowl in the hotel’s trash. He didn’t realize that a container in the bowl contained his wife Karen’s engagement, wedding and five-year-anniversary rings. Adding to the fiasco was the fact that Karen didn’t notice her rings were missing until well after they left their villa.
When the couple notified park employees of their blunder they were warned that recovering the jewelry would be next to impossible. The Campanale’s were left with no other option than to fly back to Massachusetts without the rings.
Shortly after the family departed the Wilderness Lodge resort, the executive housekeeper there realized that the trash from the Campanale’s villa hadn’t reached the industrial-size compactor yet so he and seven other volunteers tried to attempt the impossible. They donned protective clothing, emptied a gigantic rubbish receptacle in a nearby by parking lot and waded through bag after bag of trash in an attempt to find the rings.
Miraculously, they got the job done. Late last week Paul Campanale got a call from the resort that his wife’s rings were found and that the resort’s executive housekeeper would be flying to Massachusetts to deliver the jewelry to them.
Talk about going above and beyond the call of duty… and even more shocking, according to Disney officials, this was not the first time hotel employees have gone through trash to find missing items that guests have accidentally dumped. While not all stories have happy endings like the Campanale’s I think it says a lot about Disney workers that they would be willing to sift through mountains of junk to make up for their guests’ mistakes.
Leave it to Disney to deliver.
