Travel Tidbits: Free Gas, It’s a Gas, and a Ghastly Sight

FREE GAS

It doesn’t get much cheaper than free, right?

Then again, is anything in life truly free?

You can ponder that while you are trying to win 9,000 gallons of gas from a West Virginia casino. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is offering guests who are considering canceling their summer road trip due to record high gas prices the chance to walk away with fuel that is estimated to be worth more than $30,000.

It’s no joke. The casino is giving away a tanker of fuel to one lucky person on April 18th. Players can earn entries for the grand prize drawing at the track this Friday and next.

According to the casino, if your car averages 22 miles per gallon you could travel around the world nearly eight times with the amount of gas it plans to give away. Never mind how many times you could travel back and forth from your kids’ school or to grandma and grandpa’s house.

Oh, and if you are wondering where you would store all that gas, casino manager say the winner won’t be taking the fuel home, rather he or she will be receiving gas gift cards or $15,000 in cash.

IT’S A GAS

Chicago’s Lollapalooza music festival always includes high-octane performances by some of the world’s most popular rockers and this year is no exception.

The lineup for the annual summer jam, which opens this year on August 1st in Chicago’s Grant Park, has just been released. Radiohead, Kanye West and Wilco are among the 90 bands and artists who will perform for the masses. Other acts scheduled to rock the Windy City include Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Gnarls Barkley, Bloc Party, Lupe Fiasco, The Raconteurs, The Black Keys, Broken Social Scene, Cat Power and Mark Ronson.

A GHASTLY SIGHT

Okay, he’s really not that scary looking.

In fact, if you have a young dinosaur lover in your family he or she will be thrilled to spend part of the summer making friends with Thomas the Tyrannosaurus rex.

The 66-million-year-old dinosaur was excavated between 2003 and 2005 in southeastern Montana and is gradually taking shape at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. And starting Sunday, you and your pint-sized paleontologist wannabes will be able to watch as the pros reconstruct the skeleton, thanks to a new glass-enclosed lab.

According to museum staff, Thomas is one of the five most complete of its species in the world. The mighty dino stands 10 feet tall at the hip and scientists estimate he weighed 8,000 pounds at his prime. When he’s reassembled, he’ll become the star attraction in the museum’s Dinosaur Hall, which is slated for completion in 2011.
