Travel Tidbits: Road Block—Oreos, Pigs, and Veggies, Oh My!

In what some motorists in Morris, Illinois would consider an inconvenience my young daughter would see as a dream come true.

Last week a trailer loaded with 14 tons of double-stuffed Oreos overturned on an Illinois highway spilling the cookies (which by the way were still in their plastic sleeves and therefore still edible in my book) into the median and roadway.

According to police, the truck’s driver was traveling from Chicago to Morris on Interstate 80 around 4 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the median.

The end result: a virtual Oreo downpour… and a serious traffic jam. Police say they had to close both lanes of traffic while crews removed the cookies from the highway.

Meanwhile, north of Morris in Viroqua, Wisconsin police were dealing with their own traffic situation last week. Officers say a steady stream of vehicles had pulled along the shoulder of the road to look at a sight most people don’t see everyday: an enormous, hairy pig that apparently had been struck and killed by a vehicle.

“I took a look to see if it had any tusks,” one curious motorist told police. “If it did, somebody got to them before I did. It was really a big, big pig.”

Rare feral pigs, which are considered exotic species, are thought to live in southwestern Wisconsin, but most don’t roam near crowded highways. According to police, several hours after the animal was removed from the road and traffic started flowing again a semi driver admitted to hitting the 450- to 500-pound sow.

Finally, talk about sights you don’t see everyday… when was the last time you saw a stalk of celery march down the street?

Parents, if you struggle to get your children to eat their vegetables you might want to head to New York City during the third Sunday in May. That’s when the city hosts The Veggie Pride Parade.

This year’s event, which took place yesterday along the streets of Manhattan, started in the old meatpacking district and ended at Washington Square Park. Along the route, costumed bride and groom Penelo Pea Pod and Chris P. Carrot exchanged veggie vows and ask observers to “Give Peas a Chance” and “Go Vegetarian!”

Parade organizers say the mission of the event is to promote vegan and vegetarian lifestyles and the ethical treatment of animals. It was inspired by a similar parade, which takes place in Paris, France.
