Travel Tidbits: Singapore’s New Ultra-Luxe Airport Terminal and a Bicyclist’s Worst Enemy

If your air travels take you to Singapore any time soon you will be among the first to experience life at the newest and most luxurious airport terminals in the world.

Changi Airport Terminal 3 opened to the public on Wednesday and it’s already causing quite a stir among frequent flyers. The state-of-the-art structure features first-class restaurants, a host of upscale shops, a vertical garden of climbing plants and four waterfalls that spans 984 feet inside the main building. It also boasts a roof with more than 900 skylights and reflector panels that automatically allow an optimum amount of natural light in while keeping out the tropical heat. Oh, and airplanes have a space there too. In fact, the seven-story terminal has 28 aerobridge gates — eight of which are designed to handle a new generation of large, double-decker passenger jets like the Airbus A380.

And the cost of the ultra-modern, ultra-luxe terminal? A whopping $1.22 billion (1.75 billion Singapore dollars). Airport administrators say the new terminal will expand the airport’s annual capacity by 22 million to 70 million passengers a year.

The inaugural flight into Terminal 3 arrived from San Francisco on Wednesday and the first flight to depart from the new building took passengers to London, both on Singapore Airlines. Arriving passengers were greeted with a traditional lion dance performance and flowers.

A BICYCLIST’S WORST ENEMY

Police in Fullerton, California recently arrested a man they say could have seriously hurt dozens of bicyclists.

The 52-year-old man was caught digging holes on a park bike trail as payback for nearly being run down by a cyclist last year.

According to police, the man spent the last few months digging nearly 50 holes measuring about 1 foot by 2 feet along a trail at Laguna Lake Park, and in some cases he even attempted to hide the craters from cyclists. In those cases riders went over their handlebars after hitting the holes, but none reported serious injuries.

Detectives have reportedly been trying to capture the guy for months and finally caught up with him last week. Turns out that the man wanted to get even with a random bicyclist who almost ran him over last spring.

Police say the vindictive hole-digger faces a single felony count of vandalism.
