Travel Tidbits: Sleeping In Style… At Airports and Hot, Hot Hotels

SLEEPING IN STYLE

Typically, when someone mentions that he or she “slept at the airport” I deduce that a flight delay or cancellation forced him or her to seek refuge on the nearest bench in a cold terminal. But, I may have to change my vision of what sleeping at an airport really entails.

According to directors at the San Francisco Airport, later this year travelers will be able to snooze in style—-for a fee. Airport officials just announced they have approved a new retailer that plans to sell time slots in “napping chairs.” Weary travelers will no doubt be happy to see the new “sleep stations” in the airport’s international terminal. Each station will include six to eight enclosed pods where travelers can take 20-minute power naps. A 20-minute slot will cost $20 to $25. The fee includes a set of headphones that play soothing sounds (think babbling brooks and gentle waterfalls) to induce sleep. The sleep stations will also offer showers. Airport officials say they hope to have the services available by Thanksgiving.

HOT, HOT HOTELS

If you’ve ever traveled to Miami during July and August then you know how sizzling hot south Florida can get. Now area developers are taking a cue from Mother Nature and making the place a hotspot for luxury hotels.

Luxe resorts such as the Regent South Beach and Fairmont Turnberry Isle recently made news for giving travelers a place to crash in style. This fall a group of new hotels will be catering to high-end customers, especially those who don’t mind shelling out big bucks for luxurious bathrooms.

The soon-to-be-open Regent Bal Harbour’s 124 rooms and suites will boast freestanding porcelain tubs in front of floor-to-ceiling windows. (Modest bathers take note: the windows are tinted and have electronic shades.) In addition, each of the bathrooms will feature marble sinks, bidets and plasma TVs built into bathroom mirrors.

The Regent’s lavish additions follow on the heels of other resorts reaching out to those who love a good soak while on vacation. Other Miami properties are already offering soaking tubs, multiple showerheads, heated towel racks, and jetted tubs that feature breath-taking views of the ocean.
