Travel Tidbits: Visiting “Sox” and a Hotel That’ll Knock Your Socks Off

VISTING “SOX”

If you‘ve never been to Boston you don’t know what you’re missing. From the world-class shopping to the numerous kid friendly attractions, the historic city is a favorite vacation destination for millions. But, never one to rest on its laurels, Beantown is giving visitors one more reason to travel to Massachusetts.

She is a tribute to the Boston Red Sox and a nod to the team’s four-game World Series sweep of the Colorado Rockies.

No clue?

Okay, she stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs a gaunt 154 pounds. She also has long, lanky legs that she stands on for nearly 8 hours at a time.

Give up?

She’s a baby giraffe named “Sox” the newest member at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo. The calf was born after the team won Game 1, but zoo officials say they held off naming “Sox” because they didn’t want to jinx Boston’s chances of winning the Series.

“Sox” may sound like a no-brainer, but zoo staff members say they also considered naming the new calf “Red,” “Fenway,” “Champion,” or “Boston.” “Sox” is a member of the Maasai Giraffe subspecies, also known as Kilimanjaro Giraffe. Zoo administrators say Kilimanjaro Giraffes are the tallest land animals and prosper in the sprawling plains Tanzania and Kenya, in East Africa.

A HOTEL THAT’LL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF

Once you’ve got your fill of “Sox” consider heading down to Florida to visit a hotel that is sure to knock your socks off.

Renovations at Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino are finally complete and the property is celebrating with a massive grand reopening this month. The hotel is using the event to show off its new additions, including a $2 million “WonderWall” waterfall, that displays video images behind a wall of cascading water.

In addition to the splashy new water feature, the casino hotel is unveiling a new interactive display of rock ‘n’ roll artifacts, including a jacket worn by Jimi Hendrix and a guitar smashed by Pete Townshend. According to hotel staff, the lodging’s 110,000-square-foot expansion makes it the biggest casino hotel in Florida.
