Travel Tidbits: Where to See the Grinch on Ice and the Eco-cup Revolution

Tis the season for snow and ice… sculptures. The holiday season is when many (if not all) major hotels and resorts deck their halls with spectacularly festive creations.

One company in particular has a long-standing tradition of displaying the most amazing ice sculptures. This year the three Gaylord hotel and conference centers (in Nashville, near Dallas and in Kissimmee, Florida) are featuring their traditional ice sculpture extravaganzas, and the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville is incorporating a familiar storybook character in its display. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the late Dr. Seuss’ book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the hotel is going all out with ice sculptures that pay tribute to the yuletide-less green guy.

If you plan to stay at any Gaylord property this holiday season you should be aware of a new service the hotel is offering. If you order room service and your meal takes more than 30 minutes to arrive-—it’s free.

Finally, eco-friendly travelers take note: if you are not bunking at Aunt Peggy’s or grandma’s house during your holiday get together you might consider staying at a Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel has gone “green” and has just unveiled new “ecotainers.” You can find them in all of the hotel’s eateries across North America.

So, what’s an ecotainer? According to Hilton staff, it’s “the only all-natural hot beverage paper cup available that is coated with a corn-based plastic that requires less energy and generates less greenhouse gas during manufacturing. The corn-based coating also allows the cups to be composted, rather than landfilled.”

Got that?

Hilton managers say the new eco-cups will replace more than 6 million non-renewable Styrofoam-based cups used each year in the 300-plus Hilton Garden Inns.

Does the Hilton’s effort to preserve the environment give you added incentive to patronize their properties?
