Travel Updates: Cheap Trips and More to do in New York this Summer

CHEAP TRIPS

It was hard to believe the first time I heard about it-—a bus ride from New York to Washington, D.C. for a single dollar.

It’s true (although there are some restrictions) and now I’m learning that BoltBus is not the only company offering the deal. In fact, the $1 deal was actually inspired by a similar promotion launched by a discount bus line called Megabus. Last year Megabus started offering intercity travel for as low as $1. It started with service from Chicago to other Midwest cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Cleveland. A few months ago the company added bus routes out of Los Angeles to other California cities, Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona.

Now it will be the battle of the buses on the East Coast with BoltBus going head-to-head with Megabus on routes between New York and Boston and Philadelphia. Megabus passengers can also get discounted seats on service to Baltimore, Maryland; Buffalo, New York; and Toronto.

SUMMER IN NEW YORK

Looking for even more to do on your trip to New York this summer?

My tip: Head north to Bethel… and don’t forget your love beads.

On June 2nd, the Museum at Bethel Woods, located about 90 minutes north of New York City, will open to the public.

The new museum sits at the site of the 1969 Woodstock concert and curators say once you step foot in the building you will be transported back to the original three-day festival, which epitomized the era’s “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” philosophy.

The museum will feature exhibits, personal stories, multimedia experiences and programs about the 1960s. Displays spotlight everything from music and fashion to political protest. For those of you who have never visited Bethel, the new museum is part of the larger Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. The outdoor performing arts center offers annual summer concert series and other events. Performers scheduled for this summer include Cyndi Lauper, The B-52s, Ringo Starr, the New York Philharmonic, Donna Summer, The Klezmatics, the Boston Pops and a host of others.
