Treatment is OVER

When you finish your radiation therapy for testicular cancer the next step is simple rest and recover for a while. Once a week for the next few weeks you will go and meet with your radiation oncologist just so she can run some labs to make sure you are recovering ok, she will also look at the radiated area to make sure that your radiation burn is getting better.

After a month of weekly visits you get to start doing an appointment three months later for the next 2 visits, then every 6 months for the next year and then after that with testicular cancer you are considered cured and can even get life insurance again. You still have to yearly checkups which will include a CT scan to make sure there are no new tumors or enlarged lymph nodes, lab work which will check for tumor markers in your blood and a physical exam from your medical oncologist. This is a yearly checkup that you will always have to do no matter how far out you get from your original diagnosis.

There is always a chance that your cancer will come back, that you will develop a secondary cancer like my husband did. My husband actually did develop a skin cancer now we are not sure if it was because of too much sun exposure during his youth doing roofing or if it was from the radiation. He did end up having it on his lower back which he did get radiated but they simply cut it off and all was good again.

There has been so many advances in cancer treatment for testicular cancer that a person can get the all clear from the oncologist. According to my husband he does not get all that stressed when he goes for his yearly checkups. We actually have the same oncologist so we try to do our exams the same day the doctor checks one of us and then the other hops up. We should get a family discount.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
