Do you have fun going to the door to pass out candy to all those adorable trick-or-treaters? Sometimes the costumes are just too funny. I’m not big on the scary, gory, ones, but I just love when little tiny tots all dolled up in their cute costumes walk up and whisper “trick or treat” in their shy little voices.
Anymore, we don’t get very many trick-or-treaters. I think one reason is that our house is set back a fair distance from the road. Another is probably because we’re rarely at home for much of the evening on the 31st, because we’re at the party at church. I usually just leave a bag of candy by the mailbox and a sign that says, “Take one.”
However, if you are expecting trick-or-treaters, there are some things to keep in mind:
1. Make sure your outdoor lights are on so children can see clearly as they approach.
2. If your porch light is dim, pick up a brighter bulb, at least until trick or treating is over.
3. Make sure to pick up a replacement bulb in case yours happens to burn out during trick or treating hours.
4. Check the path to your door and be sure it is clear of all obstacles.
5. Check your stairs to make sure they are not slippery.
6. Make sure pets are not loose. Even the mildest mannered pet can become upset with lots of commotion, strange people, and freaky costumes around. You don’t want anyone to be harmed by your pet.
7. Check outdoor decorations to make sure they are secured and won’t fall on anyone or fall into the path and cause falls.
8. If you have any especially scary or noisy decorations, take care to move them or turn them off when tiny children approach.
Last but not least –for your own safety- make sure you buy plenty of candy!
