Help you kids make a cool trick or treat safety checklist chart. They can read over the safety tips or you can read them aloud for children too young to read as you work on this project. If you make it today, they’ll have over a week to learn the tips, which will help insure a safe and happy holiday. You can even make memorizing safety tips into a game, if you like, as you decorate the chart.
You can print out the following list, or copy and paste into one of your desktop publishing programs to use a cool font or different color. Print it, decorate the page, and hang it on the wall or fridge for easy reference.
Safety Checklist:
1. In the dark of night, you need a light.
2. When crossing the road, find a hand to hold.
3. Walk, don’t run, falls spoil the fun.
4. If the porch light isn’t on, move along.
5. Have adults check your treats, before you eat.
Notes:
These are written as rhymes to make them easier to remember, but you may want to explain each item to make sure children understand. Also, discuss your own rules and tips.
It is important to carry a flashlight once it gets dark. It is also a good idea to add reflective material or glow tape to your child’s costume.
Children need to take care crossing the street. If you aren’t going with your kids, make sure an older friend or sibling is available to hold hands and look both ways.
Kids tend to get very excited when it’s time to trick or treat, so making sure they avoid running (especially on stairs) is important. They also need to know that not every home will be offering treats, and they should pass by the ones with no lights.
It can be difficult to help children understand that not everyone is nice. You don’t want to scare them, but they need to know that treats must be checked by grown ups before anything is consumed.
Decorating Your Checklist:
1. Once you print your sheet, you can add decorations.
2. Make thumbprints with orange paint and when it dries, add faces with marker.
3. Draw or print out candy such as candy corn and make a candy border all the way around the page.
4. Another idea for a border is gluing on Halloween themed ribbon. You can also use stickers.
5. Use colored paper and make thumbprint ghosts with white paint.
