Trimming Your Christmas Tree The Frugal Way

Every year I am on the lookout for new and innovative ways to decorate my Christmas trees. I did use the plural form of trees, because we have four now. One tree is exclusively mine and no I am not selfish, I just wanted a tree I could decorate with a more elegant flair. With five children, colorful, handmade items adorn the tree, and I wanted something a bit more adult. So one tree is mine, another is the family tree which we put up in the living room, there is an additional smaller tree that used to be my children’s tree for their ornaments that they created at school, and the last tree is a small tree also that just held the overflow of ornaments.

With all those trees one has to be creative when decorating them.

Last year, my personal tree was silver, blue and white. It will be this year too. I used ornaments I had purchased but in addition, I tied blue ribbon around silver cookie cutters and strung them on the tree to fill in the gaps.

There are many other handmade or “found” items that you can use to decorate your Christmas tree. Here are a few.

Cookies

At Christmas time there are always many tins of cookies to be found at the store. The one’s with the cut out center are perfect for decorating your tree. They come in many shapes and sizes and usually have decorated edges. Just tie pretty ribbon around them and loop them through the tree. Be sure that you don’t have dogs around, because your ornaments might all disappear.

Old Ball Ornaments

Wrap ribbons, paper or fabric around old ball ornaments to give them a festive flair and create something new to hang on your tree. Use a hot glue gun to secure the embellishments in place. You can then also hot glue buttons, sequins, and other types of ribbon to the balls.

Colorful Straws

Straws are available in every color under the sun these days. And they can be purchased at a very frugal price, and are often found at the dollar store. Purchase some in your favorite Christmas colors. Open them up and cut them in half. Gather five or six in one color, and five or six in another color and tie with string, wire or ribbon in the center. Pull them very tight. You can then pull the straws and bend them to create a star. This is a fun family activity and they can be used every year.
