Tropical Winter Getaways

BRRRRRR!!!!! I am FREEZING! And I know I am not alone. It’s snowing in Mississippi and Georgia, there is ice falling from the sky in Louisiana and here in the upper Midwest a windchill advisory has been issued because the current temperature is 5 BELOW zero and the windchill (what it actually feels like outside) has plummeted to 35 BELOW zero.

To say that I wish I were at my parents home in Hawaii right now is… well… wishful thinking. And I know I am not the only one dreaming of a tropical getaway right now. The good news is if you have the means to escape the frigid conditions there are a host of sandy spots offering some sweet deals. But these are not your typical cookie-cutter beach resorts packed with winter sun-worshippers. The following beach destinations are offbeat locales where you can soak up plenty of sunshine without having to bump elbows with other tanorexics who have fled freezing temps.

Uruguay

It’s far away from traditional beach destination, but the glamorous Punta del Este in small but charming Uruguay is well worth the trip. The resort area is called the Hamptons of South America, and a string of luxury hotels have set up shop along the pristine Atlantic beaches there. With the Southern Hemisphere seasons being reversed, our wintertime is their summertime, which means you can take advantage of some great deals. For example, at the new Awa Boutique + Design Hotel where the guest rooms feature minimalist décor and modern amenities and you get free daily breakfasts, rates start at just $110 per night.

Nicaragua

Most people think of Nicaragua as one of Central America’s poorest and least visited countries but what many travelers don’t know is that the country is home to dazzling Pacific beaches complete with pounding surf and palm-fringed sands. Right now the all-inclusive resort on the beach of Pochomil: Hotel Vistamar is offering a great winter rate for potential visitors. Staying at one of their 17 oceanfront bungalows (all feature private terraces) for six days will cost you $700 per person. The price includes all meals and drinks and two excursions.

Turkey

It’s where JFK Jr. took his new wife Carolyn Bessette for the requisite romantic honeymoon. Now you too can experience life at one of Europe’s most popular beach destinations. The town of Bodrum, located on Turkey’s coast offers a perfect balance of whitewashed stucco hillside houses, sandy beaches, magnificent sunsets, historic imprints, and a vivacious nightlife. Right now, Bodrum’s deluxe Queen Ada Hotel in quiet Torba Bay located five miles from town is offering rates starting at $194 per night. Each guest room comes with a balcony and the property also includes a private beach, pool and a restaurant.
