“True Courage,” book four of the “Uncommon Heroes” series by Dee Henderson, takes us away from the world of SEALs we entered in the first three books and immerses us in the workings of the FBI.
Agent Luke Falcon is dating his cousin Mark’s sister-in-law Caroline and feels deeply for her, but his work keeps getting in the way. They first met when Mark married Caroline’s sister Sharon and hit it off right away, but a year has passed and their relationship just isn’t progressing. Luke’s job requires that he maintain emotional distance from his projects, and Caroline puts her heart and soul into everything she does. To her, he seems a little too distant, and to him, she seems a little too high-strung. Nonetheless, the attraction is definitely there.
One evening Caroline was supposed to meet Sharon and Mark for a Braves game. She arrives on time, but they do not. Four hours elapse and she doesn’t know where they are. After calling around to various hospitals, friends, and work places, she calls Luke.
Luke thinks she’s overreacting at first, but when he arrives at the house and the missing people still haven’t arrived, he realizes that there could be a problem. Calling in his partner to help, they begin to list all the possibilities, and then they drive the route Mark and Sharon would have taken. Nothing.
Finally Caroline remembers taking a cell phone call from Benjamin, Sharon’s young son, en route to their meeting place. He commented that a white van just cut them off. When Caroline mentions this to Luke, all the stakes go up. He has been tracking a serial killer who drives a white van just like Benjamin described.
Luke and Caroline put their differences aside to solve this case, which so deeply involves both of them. As they face the unknown together, they realize they can trust each other as allies, but can they trust each other in a relationship deeper than what they’ve known before? Above all, are they ready to trust God to help them deal with whatever the future might bring?
