True Honor – Dee Henderson

honor“True Honor,” book three of the “Uncommon Heroes” series by Dee Henderson features Darcy St. James, a retired CIA agent with a million-dollar bounty on her head, placed there by an angry criminal. She has gone into hiding for her own safe keeping when she gets a call from her old partner at headquarters – a Russian spy wants to give some information to the CIA but he’ll only do it if Darcy is the liaison. She feels she ought to go – she and the spy have a long history together, but when she arrives at the meeting place, he’s nowhere to be found.

Sam Houston, aka “Cougar,” is a SEAL sniper, good at his job, trained to be observant. When he sees the attractive woman waiting at the hotel pool, he wanders over to introduce himself and before he knows it, finds himself fishing her out of the pool, blood running from her side. All he knows about this woman named Darcy is that she’s in a lot of trouble and he has to help her.

When Darcy checks in with her partner, she learns that two other agents were killed that night – the attack on her was not isolated. Shock waves ripple through the entire agency when two days later, planes fly into the towers of the World Trade Center, and the CIA realizes that their agents were attacked to keep them from tracking down the identities of those behind the Trade Center bombings. Darcy is furious and frustrated, and vows to bring down the terrorists. They killed her friends, they tried to kill her, and then they killed 3,000 people. Bringing herself out of retirement officially, she starts her hunt, piecing the picture together, following leads, hunting down those who have been hunting her.

Sam is deployed just days after 9/11, sent out to search for the terrorists. He too is determined to do his job, but not just for the obvious reasons, but for Darcy too. With her feeding information to the SEALs on where to go and him leading the charge, they work together although miles apart. But then things get even more complicated when the terrorists discover that Darcy survived the attack and they decide to try again.
A white-knuckled adventure, this is one of my favorites by Dee Henderson.
