Sometimes all it takes to inspire children is a new product or two. Last night at the craft store I spotted a new product from Crayola called “True to Life”. These markers, twistable crayons, and colored pencils each have tri-color tips so that you draw with three related colors at once. The colors were chosen from true colors in the natural world.
The colors come in Amazon Rainforest (greens and yellow) , Caribbean Current (blues and purples), Florida Sunrise (oranges and yellows), Sahara Desert (tans and browns), Yosemite Campfire (reds and oranges), Maui Sunset (purples and oranges), Milky Way (blues and black), and Grand Canyon (browns and black). The colors mix really well and do look more lifelike than coloring water one solid blue color, or a fire just red.
We really liked how the colors blended. The color mix is a subtle shading. The sunrise and sunset colors are especially nice. The campfire is a nice blend for fires or fall leaves. Not only does the Milky Way make a great night sky, it also looks just like water at night. And for water or day time sky, the Caribbean Current is a beautiful mix of soft blues. The Grand Canyon makes great rocks and dragon skin.
These new True Color products are a fun addition to the art table. They are a great lesson in color mixing and shading. I think once kids play around with these they will be more adventurous about mixing colors on their own.
These crayons are unique enough to interest older children for a little while, and I think they would be a great travel distraction. Give them a try, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with them.
