True Valor – Dee Henderson

tvIn volume two of the “Uncommon Heros” series by Dee Henderson, we get to know Grace Yates, a young woman who has known her whole life that she is meant to be a naval aviator. Now one of the foremost female aviators in the military, she has the respect of her peers, but very few close friends. Life dealt her a blow she couldn’t shrug off, and she keeps her distance from those around her.

Bruce Stanton is a major, an Air Force Pararescue Jumper. He met Grace through his sister, who is Grace’s one close friend, and he found himself drawn to her quiet confidence. He decides he’d like to get to know her better, but just as that chance presents itself, they both get deployed, and that chance evaporates. Not wanting to let her slip through his fingers, Bruce starts writing her letters, hoping she’ll respond. She does.

As the months and days of the deployment slip past, Bruce and Grace develop a deep friendship which begins to turn into a romance. They aren’t sure when they’ll see each other again, or even if they will, but they want to give it every chance they’ve got. But then Grace gets shot down, and the Pararescue team is called in to find her, with Bruce at the head of the force, and he has only one thing on his mind: find her and get her out of there. With faith playing a strong part in his search, he knows that it’s only with God’s help that his mission will be a success.

This well-crafted novel will keep you on the edge of your seat and fill you with a new sense of admiration for those who risk their lives for us every day so we can continue to enjoy our freedom. An appropriate book to read on this day of remembrance.
