It is almost Thanksgiving and I am getting ready to for our annual guilt trip by my in laws. Every year around the holidays this happens when they know we like to do Thanksgiving at our house and his mother says that she understands. Even though she says she understands and is not upset we always seem to get the guilt trip. OK to be honest it is not me that gets the guilt trip because honestly it does not bother me enough anymore to feel guilty but my husband he still gets the guilt trip.
I am sure that given the fact that his Dad has been battling cancer this year that will be added to the guilt trip. Now I understand all that but I still like to do it here. When we invite them to our house I hear “Well I have done it this way for 41 years and this is how I am going to keep doing it.” Well I am married and I have kids so I am starting some traditions of our own and one of those is cooking thanksgiving dinner together. Anyone is welcomed over and my family usually does come for all or part of the day but his family will not come. Every few years our daughter’s birthday falls on Thanksgiving so we do her birthday cake on her actual birthday as well as at her party. One year we made the mistake of giving them pictures of her actual birthday and boy did we hear about it for a long time. About how we could not allow them to share in her day like my family did. Luckily this year it is not actually on Thanksgiving because with all the medical issues we have had between my ankle surgery and my husband’s kidney removal I am looking forward to a quiet, relaxing dinner with family and friends.
When dinner is over and the leftovers are put up we load the kids in the car to head to an afternoon movie. The movie part is a tradition I used to do with my niece and nephews when they were little and now we do it with our kids. They like it because there is always a new kid’s movie out the week of Thanksgiving. Who knows how bad the backlash from us not going to the in laws for Thanksgiving will be for us. Fingers crossed I will let you know. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.
