Turkey fryers have grown dramatically in popularity, but some consumer organizations are not happy about it. Turkey fryers can create some of the most sumptuous meals, but they can also be highly dangerous. They can cause severe burns and fires if not used with the utmost care.
Follow these safety tips to make sure your experience is a good one:
1. Make sure to read all the manufacturer’s instructions completely.
2. Make sure the turkey fryer is assembled properly.
3. Use your turkey fryer outdoors only.
4. The turkey fryer must be set up level and must be in a clear area away from debris and structures. It’s best to set it up on a hard surface.
5. The unit should never be left unattended, even after the flame has been turned off and cooking is done. Oil retains heat and will stay very hot for a long period of time, until cooled and emptied, make sure children and pets are kept clear.
6. Look for a fryer that has a controls the temperature. Overheating oil can lead to fire.
7. Choose the proper oil for high temperatures. Look into it, depending on the level of heat you intend to use. In general, peanut oil is a good choice for frying at somewhat high temperatures.
8. Do not attempt to fry a frozen turkeys. Ice crystals will cause spatters. The turkey should be completely thawed in advance.
9. Do not try to cook a turkey larger than what the manufacturer’s instructions recommend. This could cause spillage as can filling the pot too full with oil.
10. A turkey fryer is a tool. It should be regarded as one and protective gear should be worn, including protective eyewear and insulated oven mitts.
11. If a fire should occur, do not spray it with water. You could splash hot grease on yourself or spread the fire. Instead, purchase a standard fire extinguisher at the same time your purchase your fryer, and use it if needed.
12. Don’t be afraid to call 911 for help if necessary. It’s better to be a little embarrassed than it is to suffer a major fire or an injury.
