Turning Bad Design Trends into Good Design Trends

antler tree Some trends in home decor and design can seem hip one minute and out the next. Sometimes the trend is so fast that they are out before the magazine featuring them hits the stand. If you like to experiment and you have the means (budget) to do so, go ahead and have some fun. For the rest of us, though, these are some of the trends we should probably stay away from.

Here is how you can taken an existing trend that might make you say “What???” and turn it into one that will make you say “Wow!”

Bad Trend: Gluing things on to walls. I blame Hilde on Trading Spaces for starting this one. She would glue all sorts of things to walls from silk flowers to feathers. To me this screams “full of allergens!” Can you imagine trying to keep mold and mildew off of silk flowers when they are all over your bathroom wall?

Good Trend: Adding upholstery to the walls instead of wall paper or paint. It will give you a rich and unique look for about the same price as paper.

Bad Trend: Deer Antlers. Deer antlers have been appearing all over the place in design and are usually featured of bone or white plastic. There have been lamps. There have been wall sculptures. There have been tables. Please stop. Deer antlers are great if you own a hunting lodger, but other than that…?

Good Trend: Natural materials. Rough-hewn beams, wooden floors made from reclaimed wood, bamboo, stone, bark and other things from nature, particularly eco-friendly materials is a great way to go. Another nice way to go is to create artwork from pressed leaves and flowers or go with animal prints (as in foot prints). Go ahead and bring the outdoors in, but leave the actual animal parts alone.
