One of my brothers works at a five star hotel in the middle of Waikiki—a spot often frequented by the rich and famous. It also happens to be a favorite retreat of ex-“Beverly Hills 90210″ star, Shannen Doherty. The last time she was there she chatted up my brother (who was never a fan of the show). He said she was very laid-back, polite and personable. That is, until her male companion exited the elevator, within minutes, my brother says she and this unidentified man got into a “heated discussion” about cigarettes. Oh well, so much for being laid-back. Perhaps, she was having a bad day.
I share my brother’s encounter with Doherty because I thought about it the other day when I heard a tease for an entertainment news show claim: “Shannen Doherty Is Looking For Love.” (I guess things didn’t work out with the cigarette guy.) In the interview with TV’s “Extra” Doherty admits that she is ready to settle down provided she can find the man of her dreams.
“I feel really well-equipped now, but I think it has more to do with the fact that I’ve been single for so long and not dating and that I’ve learned a lot about myself,” told the reporter.
Keep in mind that the former “Charmed” star has been married (albeit briefly) twice before. Her marriage to Ashley Hamilton (son of George Hamilton and Alana Stewart) lasted from 1993-94. Then in 2003 she said, “I do” to Rick Salomon (best remembered as Paris Hilton’s costar in that infamous sex tape). They divorced a year later.
Perhaps, her experience will help her with her new TV venture. At 35, Doherty is launching a new reality show on the Oxygen network called Trials of Love, in which “she’ll help couples break off bad relationships.”
As for Doherty’s own search for Mr. Right, “I’m a little too old to be making the same mistakes,” she says. Doherty, who is trying to shed her “bad girl” image, says she no longer spends her nights making the rounds at Hollywood hotspots. In fact, the Memphis-native admits to being a homebody, which she says makes it difficult to find a future mate. “Here’s the funny part. I never leave the house, so I don’t know how I’m gonna find him. The guy who delivers the newspaper? Are you cute? I hope so, ’cause that’s the guy I’m gonna meet … seriously! I go to work and I come home. Don’t laugh at me. It’s true.”
